In this day-long workshop, you will learn how to use and make several styles of easy-to-make and easy-to-reproduce handmade books. This class will challenge your idea of the book as a vessel for finished work, but one step in the writing process. First, we will employ the small books we make (using scrap paper) as portable means of radical revision. Next, writers will practice making booklets, chapbooks, fascicles (a la Emily Dickinson), some using tools at all. You will learn how to produce and reproduce simply-made books as a means to publish your own work, and that of others. You will leave class with several templates for making limited-edition books. Every writer who takes this class will leave with all they need to know to become a micro-publisher. Beginners Welcome!

Testimonials
"
Elaine Sexton is a jewel. She is so generous with her time and feedback. I look forward to taking another class with Elaine soon!"
“At The Writing Institute I first saw myself as a poet. Elaine Sexton encouraged me to experiment with forms I would not have tried, and helped me collect a group of poems to form my first chapbook.” - Marion Brown, The Morning After Summer
“I continue to rely on and work with Elaine Sexton to this day. She is one of the most generous and inspiring teachers I have known." - Linda Hillman Chayes, The Lapse
"Like so many of Elaine Sexton's other students, I never really became a 'former student.' I took my first workshop with Elaine over 15 years ago at The Writing Institute, and I still continue to work with her today. Elaine is one of the most generous and inspiring teachers I have ever had. I honestly don't know if I ever would have had the nerve to send my work out to be considered for publication without her encouragement. Because of her, I have learned about the craft of poetry and about the publication process; for that reason, I consider her my mentor as well. Honestly, every time I take a workshop with her, I feel like I am coming home." - Cami Zinzi O'Brien A Welcome Roughness
"Elaine Sexton is a superb teacher. She is generous, thoughtful, insightful, and truly creative. Each of her writing prompts are beautifully constructed -- they enable students to experience deep, pleasurable dives into writing time after time. Everyone should take her class." - former student
