Writing from Observation, Looking at Art: An Experiential Workshop
« back to classes page
This workshop is an invitation to explorers & makers, writers of all genres, who would like to join a curated conversation, and expedition of looking at visual art together in New York City.
In this two-part workshop participants will be supplied with reading material, in advance, a few prompts, and a guided tour of 4-6 galleries in Chelsea. We meet, again, the next day on campus, where we will continue with in-class exercises designed to draw from our individual and shared experience.
As an art writer and poet, instructor Elaine Sexton is eager to open the door a little wider to those who are curious to know more about art, and respond to it, not as critics, but as subject matter.
Saturday April 22 to Sunday April 23
10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Saturday in Manhattan (location TBA; transportation not provided)
Sunday on campus (Bronxville, NY)
Who should take this class?
Writers of all genres - beginners welcome!
Testimonials
“At The Writing Institute I first saw myself as a poet. Elaine Sexton encouraged me to experiment with forms I would not have tried, and helped me collect a group of poems to form my first chapbook.” - Marion Brown, The Morning After Summer
“I continue to rely on and work with Elaine Sexton to this day. She is one of the most generous and inspiring teachers I have known." - Linda Hillman Chayes, The Lapse
"Like so many of Elaine Sexton's other students, I never really became a 'former student.' I took my first workshop with Elaine over 15 years ago at The Writing Institute, and I still continue to work with her today. Elaine is one of the most generous and inspiring teachers I have ever had. I honestly don't know if I ever would have had the nerve to send my work out to be considered for publication without her encouragement. Because of her, I have learned about the craft of poetry and about the publication process; for that reason, I consider her my mentor as well. Honestly, every time I take a workshop with her, I feel like I am coming home." - Cami Zinzi O'Brien A Welcome Roughness
"Elaine Sexton is a superb teacher. She is generous, thoughtful, insightful, and truly creative. Each of her writing prompts are beautifully constructed -- they enable students to experience deep, pleasurable dives into writing time after time. Everyone should take her class." - former student
