Do you ever find yourself feeling so much about something, sitting down to write, and wondering how to connect the heat of your inspiration with the page? Or have you thought, “I just want some time to write a poem, but I can’t find it?” In this one-day intensive, we’ll focus on craft strategies for harnessing the heat of feeling and pouring it into a poem. You’ll bring a writing notebook and a mood to our session, and we’ll talk about tips and techniques before diving in and creating new work during our time together. The goal of this class is for you to receive strategies for bringing feeling to the page, and you’ll write one brand new poem (perhaps two), and receive verbal feedback from me.
As models, we’ll look at poems in this year’s Best New Poets and Best American Poetry anthologies, talk about ways to sculpt metaphor, simile, and repetition into feeling, and then you’ll receive specific guidance from me to generate a new draft that we work on and talk about during our time together. From feeling to the poem, this class will bring a brand new poem from your heart to the world.

“I was always looking forward to this class, and I am sad it is over!I enjoyed the prompts, I enjoyed the discussions, and I enjoyed the community that Tyler did such a lovely job crafting. I feel like I have gained much more confidence in my writing.” - former student
“I’ve really seen myself grow in terms of ability to produce self reflective pieces; things like focusing on carnal details, allowing myself to be vulnerable, and experimenting with dialogue has helped expand my writing tool kit.” - former student
“Thank you for a wonderful and inspiring class. I really enjoyed it. My main goal was to jumpstart my writing again and set the goal to complete my memoir and begin the publishing phase. This class was the push I was looking for and needed.” - former student
"Tyler Mills exemplifies the best qualities in a teacher of poetry. She is a fountain of information about craft and innovation. She is an encourager, building her students confidence by highlighting their strengths. Beyond that, she is an astute editor that importantly, gives feedback that amplifies the poet’s unique voice. Her wise counsel about the business of poetry and getting published has been life changing for me." - former student
"Anything Tyler teaches, I am in—be it poetry, memoir, or lyrical essay. She provides the most engaging prompts, her lectures stimulate rich discussions, and her thoughtful feedback goes to the writing’s heart, setting the writer ready to move the poem or piece to the next level. In short, all of Tyler's workshops I have attended have been enriching beyond expectations." - former student
"This is one of the best workshops I’ve taken if judged by the creativity it sparked. It was refreshing to be in a group so serious (in a good way) about writing poetry." - former student
