ClassGraphic Write a Story: Fiction or Memoir, Your Hero’s Journey

A 5-week writing workshop where we will write stories and learn the widely respected steps of storytelling based on The Hero’s Journey. If you have a story you’re working on, or one you’d like to get started, this is the class for you.

Will you have to follow a formula? Not at all. You will learn how to write a great beginning, plot obstacles for your character, write a compelling climax and a great ending.

Does it matter if you write fiction or memoir? It doesn’t. Ultimately, readers are seeking good stories. Readers want to fall in love with characters and experience their quest—their Hero’s Journey—and that can be reality-based, fiction, fantasy, literary or rom-com, gothic or thriller.

Is any story too inconsequential? No. Often it is the simplest of stories that touch our hearts the most. Consider Raymond Carver’s 6-page story, ‘Why Don’t You Dance?’ which is about the sad yard sale of a couples’ household belongings. Or read ‘The Story of an Hour’ by Kate Chopin which at about 3-pages is hard to ever forget.

And, YES, often short pieces become books. We’ll consider this, too, and discuss the process of getting published.

This is your chance to receive feedback from the teacher and the class. Writers will finish with a plan for how to revise if needed, add depth, content, and enrich their stories.

Be prepared to read and discuss your own work and that of fellow students. Students have the opportunity to send us their work for review in class. We will also write during the class and focus on story, dialogue, themes, character development, and more.
