Poem Like You Mean It: A Generative Poetry Class

What makes a poem? While everyone’s answer might be different, in this workshop, we’ll explore what makes a poem good. What gives it fire? What gives it meaning? In class, we’ll read contemporary and classic poets who continue to define the genre. We’ll deconstruct lines and stanzas to figure out what draws us in–and how we can do the same in our own poems. With prompts and guides given in class, you will challenge yourself to create new poems–and you’ll also have at-home exercises to flex that muscle. Additionally, we’ll study the craft of poetry, as the process of poem-making is just as important as the final poem itself.

No poetry practice is complete without studying what continues to make poetry beautiful. If you need to stay accountable with your poetry or if you are just looking to make your poetry fresh again, this is the workshop for you.

Who should take this class?
Beginners and experienced poets are welcomed.

July 22 to August 19, 2024
Mondays, 6pm to 8pm EST on Zoom

Testimonials
“I started Arriel’s class as a new writer, desperately needing inspiration and feedback from what I had previously written. It was so exciting and refreshing to have someone read my poetry, and I felt, for the first time, that I could be heard. Because of Arriel, I learned what had worked for me as a writer and what I could improve on...I am so grateful for the experience I had with her."

"I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Arriel’s poetry erasure workshop...I left feeling so empowered.”

"Arriel is an incredibly thoughtful instructor. Taking her class is like taking a class on analysis of writing while also applying it to your own writing - most classes take one or the other approach, in Arriel's class you get the gift of both."
