Windows, Doors, and Floors: Writing an Essay
A 5-week workshop. Week by week, part by part, you’ll explore a subject for an essay that you work on and revise in pieces. You’ll craft windows through which you’ll investigate something, you’ll find the doorway in and out, you’ll locate the ceiling and stretch the essay or memoir chapter as far as it can go, and in the process, you’ll assemble your drafts and process work into a full essay.
Short writing prompts that invite you to think about character/persona, research, arc, texture, and emotional heat will be “workshopped” and talked about during our time together. These exercises are explorations in process. You’ll build the pieces into a finished draft that we’ll discuss during our last class. In this workshop, you’ll generate new material and receive verbal feedback that helps you construct and shape a brand-new essay for your final class.
