Writing Fiction for Young People: Generative Workshop
"When we write fiction, we write the world." - Matthew Salesses, Craft in the Real World: Rethinking Fiction Writing and Workshops

Join award winning children's author Padma Venkatraman for this generative 10-week workshop to unlock your creativity. Informed by the author’s own experiences after more than a decade of conducting writing workshops, we will strive to create a safe space for writing, sharing and honest, constructive feedback. Our aim will be to support and nurture our unique voices, in opposition to "Silencing writers" which has been "central to the traditional writing workshop model" as Felicia Chavez notes in The Anti-racist Writing Workshop. Through writing prompts, guided meditations and other hands-on exercises, participants will be invited to delve deeply into the craft and fine art of writing for young people.

The first hour of every session will be devoted to the presentation of a generative exercise, which the group will work on together. During the second hour, we will have time for each participant to read and share whatever original work they choose, and receive solicited group critiques in a supportive setting. The aim of any and all feedback provided will be to empower and embolden writers as they seek to strengthen their pieces and stride forward in their writing journeys.

February 5th to May 6th, 2024 (no class 2/19, 3/4, 4/1, 4/22)
Mondays, 5:00pm - 7:00pm EST
on Zoom

Who Should Take This Class?
This course is open to writers of all levels working on novels of any length (from chapter books for young readers to new adult novels) and who are seeking to experiment with writing techniques, develop a personal writing practice and unlock their creativity as they develop a draft or polish existing drafts of novels for our most important audience: children and young adults.

Testimonials
"Padma Venkatraman is a literary treasure. I have been following her work for over 15 years and I have never been disappointed. Padma’s insight into cultures and characters makes her a voice to pay attention to in the world of Young Adult literature. Not only are these issues clear and present in her books, they surface in the many occasions she has to speak to students, teachers, and academics."
 - Dr. Steven T. Bickmore, University of Las Vegas, NV, USA

"When Venkatraman spoke to our class, she expressed the power she believes there is in having open-ended stories because there is a power to allowing readers to create their own ending and see the characters the way they want to see them. I think this allows for her powerful characters to become even better role models, because readers can make the story end in a way that fits their own life situation. I greatly appreciate Venkatraman writing the strong-willed, intelligent, and brave female lead characters that she has in her books. Her characters are inspirational and will continue to provide a great literary role model for years to come."
- Dr. Linda Pavonetti, Oakland University, MI, USA
