Byline Bootcamp: Everything You Need to Know to Get Your Nonfiction Published
Byline Bootcamp: Everything You Need to Know to Get Your Nonfiction Published
A five week nonfiction workshop. Do you have a story to share? Want to break into the industry or become more widely published? Curious how freelancers make a living? Byline Boot Camp is a 2 and a half-hour interactive workshop that covers all this and more. The course breaks down the process of publishing short nonfiction (articles and essays around 700-1200 words) into clear, manageable steps that will help you accomplish your goals, whether you want to see your name in print, develop an online platform on an area of expertise, or bring in a steady income as a freelance writer.
We'll go over where good story ideas come from, who wants our writing, how to write a query letter, making contact with editors and what happens next. Throughout, I'll talk about my experience as a freelancer with bylines in print and online at Allure, Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, TIME Magazine, Good Housekeeping, The Guardian, InStyle, the Kitchn, Marie Claire, Narratively, New York Magazine, Real Simple, Salon, Washington Post, Vice, The Writer and more. The class will generate an annotated list of publications that accept freelance writing, and students will be invited to share potential story ideas and have their pitches workshopped in real time.
Whether you’re completely new to the industry or you’ve been in the game for a while now and you just need a refresher, this course is sure to inform and inspire.
