Writing Home
« back to classes page
In this craft class, we’ll examine the many kinds of homes that exist, ranging from houses to nations to the body itself. We’ll disassemble the concept of home and construct it again in fresh ways. Our readings will take us from the Grimms’ Fairytale “Hansel and Gretel” through works by Justin Torres, Amy Tan, Alison Bechdel, and into the present day as we write about our changing relationships with home in the time of quarantine. Each week, there will be a 20-40 page reading and a 500-word writing prompt based on the discussion. Students will have their chance to read their work aloud in class on a voluntary basis. I will personally read and provide empathetic feedback on all written work.
Course Outline
Week 1: Home in Architecture, Nation, and the Body
Week 2: Home as Haven or Quagmire

May 30 to June 27th, 2023
Tuesdays, 10:00am to 12:00pm EST

Testimonials
“Samantha’s session was warm, well-organized, and clear. Incredibly helpful!” - former student
“Samantha Steiner’s ‘Submitting to Lit Journals’ course was just what I needed to kickstart my submissions to lit journals. I put off doing so because I didn’t know where to begin and what to expect in the process. Samantha offers helpful guidance on how to identify, organize, submit to, and manage both acceptances and rejections from journals. She leaves no question unanswered about the process with her own successful submission record serving as evidence of a method that works. After taking Samantha’s course, I now have a systematized strategy for submitting my work, and am ready and excited to get started.” - Terri Linton (Catapult contributor)
“Samantha is a writer bursting with information about the literary world. She takes care with her explanations and goes the extra mile to ensure that you really understand the process. She is a deep listener, reader, and thinker who is able to go deep into your text to see the meaning behind the meanings and will allow you to unlock your work’s greatest potential.” - former student
"I found this class so incredibly valuable. Samantha magically and enthusiastically took the anxiety out of submitting in a comprehensive presentation that led us, step by step, to understanding and demystifying the process of submitting to literary journals. She generously shared her own processes and made particular suggestions for each of us, based on how we described our own writing. I have already recommended her class to other writer friends. This class is fantastic. I'm so glad I took it." - former student
