5 Week Prose Workshop: The Art of Writing Great Dialogue

« back to classes page
CourseGraphic Great dialogue can move a story forward, offer insight into characters, and give readers the delicious feeling that they are eavesdropping on real life. But while the best dialogue sounds effortless and natural, it can actually be quite tricky to pull off. Whether you are writing fiction or memoir (in narrative form or as a script), this five-session class will help you develop your writer's ear for conversation and turn your characters' thoughts into convincing, compelling dialogue. The class will include craft lessons, brief writing assignments, and in-class workshopping of students' written scenes, as well as the instructor's written feedback on each student's work.

July 11th - August 8th, 2023
Tuesdays, 12:00pm-2:00pm, EST
on Campus

Testimonials:
"I was afraid of writing dialogue, fearing all my characters would sound alike -- and would sound like me. Susan’s helpful class focused on the elements of dialogue as she encouraged us to bring out the individual reactions, personalities and voices of our characters - even as they chatted in groups! - and freed me of my fear. I highly recommend her dialogue course. " - Cheryl Denney White, writing student

“The strategies Susan Kleinman provided in her class at Sarah Lawrence College got me going again after a long period of not writing. I appreciated the balance of useful information and warm encouragement, and I would highly recommend Susan’s workshops to anyone who is struggling with getting words on the page.” Jane Paznik-Bondarin, writer and retired professor of English, Borough of Manhattan Community College.
"Susan Kleinman is a gifted teacher of writing who is dedicated to bringing out every student's potential. She got me started on my writing journey with her introductory course, and helped me through a rough patch with sessions on overcoming writer's block." Steven Gleason, published short-story writer.
